Maison Martin Margiela – Photos & Review

On November 15, H&M released their latest designer collection, this one with cult avant-garde favourite, Maison Martin Margiela Paris. I’ve always loved the brand’s modern approach to design, so I was excited to pick up a few select pieces from the line. Here are my thoughts on the collection and my goodies:

Of course, I had to take some photos featuring some of the avant-garde pieces.

I’m wearing the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M sparkly discoball leggings ($49.95) and the invisible heel booties ($349). I’m also wearing a sheer black top from H&M, as well as a metal collar from H&M as well.

While the boots are a stunning piece of art, I simply can’t justify the $350 price tag, and with Canadian taxes, they came in just under $400. Bearing in mind they are still H&M quality, the price was astronomical for the fast fashion retailer. I fell in love with the acrylic heel, but sadly, the lift is not even half a centimetre thick! I could only imagine trying to find a cobbler who could keep up with these high-maintenance shoes. Definitely more suited for indoor wear, which is ludicrous, considering they’re boots. After wearing them around the house for a bit, they are also not the most comfy. I ordered a size up (definitely order up if you’re still considering purchasing them) and they still squish my feet (and I have narrow feet). All around, these shoes are definitely worth suffering for, if you have the cash and don’t mind the pain, they are so stunning!

I tried layering a skirt over the leggings and liked the look too. This skirt is c/o nowistyle.

Now for the leggings… I thought they were fairly priced at $49 in Canada, and comparable to similar styles from stores like American Apparel or French Connection. The leggings are lined with a thin black fabric, and have metallic disco ball pieces fixed onto the top fabric. The effect is glimmering under the light, but I am weary of the mosaic pieces flaking off with wear. Definitely a nice piece to pick up from the collection, but I can’t see these lasting too long. Again, another high-maintenance piece!

I also picked up the nude leotard. I bought it a size up, and it doesn’t fit! Needless to say, I’ll be taking it back and probably not buying another. Maybe it’s the ballerina in me, but I can’t stand leotard with snap closures! However, the quality and price is right for $49.95 for a re-issue of an avant-garde piece from the house of MMM.

In the end, I thought the collection was very artistic and full of visually-interesting pieces. Although it wasn’t cohesive, it was the perfect opportunity for a Maison Martin Margiela fan to pick up a piece. Call it a greatest hits collection, however, it definitely wasn’t a hit for the high street retailer. Lines were dismal, and after taking the clothes home, I’m even less impressed.

I was so sad when I returned them, but as you can see in the video, they are very high maintenance! They have no ball of foot or heel cushion and the sole is very narrow, so I couldn’t imagine them being too comfy 🙁 but if you love them enough, fashion is worth the pain!
