Best and Worst Dressed – 2013 Golden Globes

Last night at the Golden Globes the stars made it down the red carpet in supposedly “chilly” LA weather. That didn’t deter any starlets from showing skin, sometimes behind the veil of a nude or lace fabric. Here are my picks for the five best… and five worst looks of the night.

5. Marion Cottillard in Dior. I love stars that take risks… and this was the biggest fashion risk of the night. I love this asymmetrical red gown by Raf Simons designing for Dior, and I think that too often, stars that aren’t nominated go over the top. This is elegant, simple and sexy without begging for all the attention of a nominee.

Emily Blunt

4. Emily Blunt in Michael Kors. I love the way Blunt pulled off this warm gold gown with gorgeous lace details. I think without the cutouts, it would have looked matronly, but she definitely wore it well with simple hair and accessories.

3. Julianne Moore in Tom Ford. Finally! A star with impeccable styling. I love the simple mod lines of this black and white Tom Ford gown, but what really sells me are the accents of gold accessories and Moore’s gorgeous updo. A very elegant look for someone with her experience and star power.

2. Naomi Watts in Zac Posen. While Lena Dunham looked ho-hum in another Posen creation, this burgundy confection hit the mark! Naomi looks stunning in this elegant, long-sleeved burgundy dress. The colour is right on trend and compliments her fair skintone. The keyhole and long sleeves was also a silhouette worn by Kate Hudson (which definitely fell flat) but this dress let the colour talk, so no gold hardware was necessary. I also love her hair and earrings and the way the dress looks great from all angles. Bravo!

anne

1. Anne Hathaway in Chanel. This dress was perfect for Anne. It showed off her slim silhouette and new edgy look. The best part about this look? Her shoes! They were custom made vegan shoes by Aldo. I love how she mixed high-end and low-end designers, proving that you don’t need to spend $1000 on shoes that will never see the light of day under layers of tulle. Hathaway wore white again after a fashion win at the Les Mis premiere, and it really made her stand out from a sea of red and gold dresses last night. I wasn’t loving her shorn locks till now, but it’s an edgier Anne Hathaway, a woman who’s grown into a style maven and award-winning actress. I can’t wait to see what she’ll wear to the Oscars in February.

And now… on to the worst looks of the night. There were so many to choose from. Honourable mentions go to Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad, Jennifer Lawrence in a tomato Dior Haute Couture gown, and Eva Longoria doing her best Angelina leg impression in Pucci.

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals5. Julianne Hough in Monique Lhuillier. While I love the gold bodice of the dress… she was trailing organza tissue all over the floor. The dress literally swallowed up her petite frame, while her faux-mo hairstyle made her Miley Cyrus’ doppleganger.

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals4. Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera. I admit it. I love this gown… but somehow, it’s more Met Gala than Hollywood Awards Show. It’s just too much pattern and volume for this event. I think Liu could have pulled it off if she had worn her hair up with pearls instead of that Pinterest-inspired braid concoction. And most importantly… the dress needs a good hemming! Guess it’s already back to the designer’s sample rack by now.

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Press Room3. Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein. Jessica… where are your boobs? This dress makes her breasts look droopy, and doesn’t define her waist or hips either. The colour is beautiful and I admire the simplicity, but the cut is all wrong! I’m sure Gwenyth would have pulled it off, but Chastain needs a bit more of a boost.

Sienna Miller2. Sienna Miller in Erdem. This is sixties inspiration gone bad. While the former Factory Girl star has that free-spirit, this dress is a sonotube with daisies stuck on it.

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals1. Halle Berry in Versace. I feel like I’ve been transported back in time to 1997 at the Versace mansion in Miami. I’m more than sure this was ripped off the curtain rod and transformed into a dress. Probably made by fairy godmother Donatella.
