While I didn’t catch any of the live action from the 2014 American Music Awards, I was following along on Instagram and Twitter for all the red carpet highlights. Putting together this list was hard, because as usual at a music event, there were so many fashion misses that it was nearly impossible to pick a top five. Here are my picks for the best and worst dressed 2014 American Music Awards.
The best dressed at the AMAs:
Kendall Jenner was the best dressed from the Kardashian Klan in attendance. The dress is very risque, but the simple hair and plain black pumps let the dress do the talking.
Nicki Minaj looked lovely and trendy in this Alexander Wang outfit on the red carpet, before changing into a flowy, white chiffon gown for her performance.
Charli XCX in Vivienne Westwood Red Label rocked the red carpet in this curve-hugging gown.
Fergie looked so sexy in this Halston Heritage gown. The leg slit and bondage sandals are super edgy, but I wish she did more with her hair, which looks a bit too bohemian and undone for this vixenish dress.
Kate Beckinsale continues her reign as the red carpet queen (and the object of every man’s desire… seriously, I’ve yet to meet a guy who didn’t dig Beckinsale) in this figure-hugging, plunging Kaufmanfranco white dress. The snake necklace is really cool, and I love the low-key slicked back pony.
Rita Ora stunned in this bright yellow Zac Posen gown. Love it or hate it, it was the perfect style statement for the AMAs, a great place to take a risk on a wild gown, but this one suited her perfectly!
And now for the worst dressed…
Kylie Jenner in Alexander Vauthier looks a bit… vampy? In her E interview, she pronounced the designer and Alexander Va-ther. Oh God. These girls say they love “Paris like so much!” It wouldn’t hurt for them to pick up a few lessons in French, or learn how to pronounce the name of the designer that your stylist/the designer themselves let you wear for free! She was also wearing a grill. Green hair and a grill, she’s just a complete amalgam of angsty teenage Tumblr tropes. Beyond the ill-fitting gown, the gold wristwatch is too basic, the tassle clutch is distracting, and those mesh shoes are just too much. For such a messy outfit, her hair should have been slicked into a sleek bun to offset the negligee she calls a dress.
Model Gigi Hadid wore a Prabal Gurung suit for an unexpected fashion choice that fell flat. It could have been great without the lace bra and a better pair of shoes than the satin t-straps that remind me of the selection of a department store during prom season.
Heidi Klum wore a Versace outfit that would have worked for Klum in the 1990s. She’s getting too old (great body or not) to constantly be showing this much skin on the red carpet. It’s not ageist, I just wish her style evolved into something more elegant or unique instead of her usual displays of shock and awe with skin, glitter and head-to-toe in one designer. Objectively speaking, the dress is all wrong. The skirt is too short, stopping mid-calf and cutting her legs short. Making Heidi Klum’s legs look short is a crime against fashion! I hate the pastel glittery shoes with buckles, they scream early 2000s to me, and are too matchy-matchy with the pink glitter seatbelt intersecting her torso.
Jennifer Lopez reminded us that she’s got a body in this nude bandage dress. It looks like she got tangled in aerial silks, and is just a bit too dated for 2014.
Bleona Qereti (apparently the “Madonna of Albania”) is without a doubt the worst dressed at the 2014 AMAs. She did her best “Miley Cyrus at the 2013 Met Ball impression” in this mesh get up, complete with pasties and a g-string. She might have raided Lil Kim’s closet, circa 2003 or just got off work. Okay I’m horrible.
