How to Look One Size Smaller in Jeans

The hunt for a great pair of jeans is always exhausting. With so many styles, cuts and fits, it can be a bit overwhelming. But one brand, NYDJ promises to help you look one size smaller in jeans! A few weeks ago, I checked out the NYDJ pop-up event to get fitted for a pair of jeans. This season, the denim brand has teamed up with Dress for Success Toronto, and is donating $10 if you try on a pair of jeans. Women in the GTA can get this experience at the Toronto Women’s Show on November 10-12, 2017. The series will also roll out in offices across the greater city area.

I was really excited to check out the brand and participate, because I wanted to support the wonderful cause. I actually had a chance to chat with one woman who used the service, who had difficulties landing a job as a Diversity consultant after moving from India. She explained how working with Dress for Success involved so much respect, and that they found the perfect look to compliment her style and type of job interview. We chatted about how difficult it can be getting through the job interview process, and how the right clothes and confidence can help get a job. She’s since gone on to work with Ernst & Young and now works as an independent diversity consultant. It’s great to see a fashion brand team up with this initiative, so I’d definitely recommend trying on a pair!

I got set up with a fit consultant and tried on a few styles. I originally went for a pair of dark skinny jeans, but ended up falling in love with the boyfriend style. All the girls at the event wearing the boyfriend style raved about how comfy they are. I personally loved how they were casual, but were still clean and proper enough to wear to work on casual fridays. NYDJ is locally available at Hudson’s Bay and Nordstrom.

So… back to the focus of this post – how to look one size smaller in jeans? NYDJ has pioneered their fit and construction to add a smoothing panel over the front waistband. This almost acts like built-in Spanx, and smooths out any muffining. For me, I love this look because it’s super polished and smooth! I also love that I’m able to tuck in a dress shirt or tee and still look sleek!

To look one size smaller in jeans, it’s a good idea to go for a stretch jean that’s a bit tight to give you that tightening, butt-lifting action! You definitely have to try on the jeans in person, but overall, the combination of the panels and the fabric material helps smooth everything out.

For NYDJ sizing, I went down 2 sizes. I normally wear a size 27/28 jean or a size 4, and ended up going with the size 0 in the boyfriend style. NYDJ has universal sizing between their styles – meaning they’re all the same pattern and cut, however, depending on the material (some were less stretchy denim), I could wear a size 2 in a couple styles.

I paired these NYDJ boyfriend jeans with an embroidered blouse from Zara (exact dupe here under $40), a Gucci Marmont belt, and leather sandals from Prague (similar style I love here).

Another tip to look one size smaller in jeans is to go for a style that elongates your legs and draws attention away from wider hips. My body type is definitely more pear shape (I’ve learned to hide it by accentuating my waist, and choosing fuller skirts), so to balance that out, I’ve worn a top with ruffles on the shoulders and added a belt to draw attention to a narrower part of my torso. I’ve also added nude heels to make my legs look even longer and balance out the cropped, capri length. These are all optical illusions that can help balance things out!

Of course, to look one size smaller in jeans, you could also go for a darker wash or a style that has “wash contouring.” These NYDJ boyfriend jeans do a bit of that by having the wash lighter on the centre of my thighs and darker on the edges… just light highlight and contour!

While these NYDJ jeans are a bit more up there in price, I really like the smoothing effect of the panels, as well as the fact that they are made in the USA. The quality is exceptional so far, and I’ve been wearing them non stop. They’re extremely comfortable, and I love love love that I can tuck in shirts without having that “bulge.” If you’re hoping to look one size smaller in jeans, I’d definitely recommend getting fitted… and you’ll also help a great cause!

Disclosure: Jeans were gifted to me, but my opinions are all my own!
