How to Wear Emerald – Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year

St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner, and shades of green have been gracing  editorials, runways and red carpets everywhere.  We all have a kelly green-coloured top hanging in our closet, reserved for St. Patrick’s Day. But this year, you should bust out that green outfit more often, since the Pantone Colour Institute named Emerald the 2013 colour of the year. Keep reading below, or check out my article on 29 Secrets.

“Green is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Emerald, a perfectly balanced green, is a mix of warm and cool, which makes it so versatile and flattering to many skin tones.”

Here are some ways to make people green with envy:

1. Nailpolish

Light green nail polish can look icky… but a rich jewel-toned emerald or forest green? Totally chic. You can wear green polish as an alternative to plums or navy polish for a more updated look. This nail polish is chip-resistant and high-shine, just like a real emerald stone.

2. Jewelry

There’s no easier way to incorporate rich emerald tones than on a shiny bauble. While real emeralds are timeless (and costly), oversized statement necklaces in dark green plastic are an economical way to incorporate two big spring trends in your wardrobe. An emerald-tone plastic bangle is also the perfect new member for your arm party.
Try: JewelMint Emerald Burst Cuff, $30.

3. Coat

You don’t have to wait until spring to embrace emerald. Snuggle up in a warm wool coat in a rich colour. While burgundy might have been the hot colour for coats this fall, a rich green colour is fresh and unique. This one from Asos has a contrasting cream shearling peter pan collar, and classic duffle toggles.
Try: Whistles Camille Duffle Coat, On Sale $284 at ASOS.

4. Dress

Looking ahead to spring, a sheer, chiffon dress in this bold hue compliments everything from a dressy peplum top to an easygoing cotton summer sweater.
Try: Zara Gathered Dress, $60 at Zara.

5. Dress up your home

Hits of green can punch up any white room, and this doesn’t just mean putting a plant in a room. Add a white and green-printed pillow on your couch or a luxe green throw for an unexpected focal point in your living area. And if you’re looking for a more permanent solution, emerald is a lucky and dramatic colour for your front door. It definitely beats your basic beige or black.
Try: Ikea Brukbar Glass, $2.49 at Ikea.

6. Green Mascara

Coloured mascara was a hit on the runways of DKNY for Spring. While pink lashes aren’t as wearable, green is more subtle and very exotic. Perfect for brightening hazel eyes or adding even more drama to green, an emerald-coloured mascara is very pretty if used on top lashes, and brown for the bottom set.
