The first show I attended at NYFW was the Jay Godfrey FW 2016 presentation. I was excited to check out his slinky gowns and sexy evening pieces.

The collection featured some new takes on eveningwear, with plenty of jumpsuits, gowns with cutouts and dresses over pants. These are trends I’ve seen on many bloggers, and I love that it’s now being translated to formal wear.

The colour palette was an interesting mix of jewel tones; sapphires, purples, and emeralds, as well as muted mauves and pinks.

My favourite look by far was a sleek emerald green jumpsuit. The cut, colour and overall look was so fierce and elegant. Many of the pieces in the collection had a 1970s vibe, with flared legs and sleeves, but modernized by their cuts and sleek fabric choices.

I also loved the staging for this presentation, which included some gorgeous palms, and futuristic gold planters (which was actually just mylar wrapped around the bases to create the look). The setting coincided with the aesthetic of the collection which helped drive the direction.

The presentation featured many quirky details, including leather gloves, amazing nail art, gold floral rings and architectural shoes by United Nude. All of these elements combined into a forward-thinking show, that proves that formal wear can be accessible and exciting for a younger generation.

Jay Godfrey is sold online at Nordstrom and on Revolve Clothing.
