Lavish & Squalor

A little while back, I had the amazing opportunity to be styled by Bobby Raffin with pieces from one of my favourite stores on the Queen West strip, Lavish and Squalor.

I am wearing a vintage leopard print coat with leather riding gloves. When we were looking around the store, something about this jacket called my name. I’m a sucker for animal print, and the pony hair texture was so luxurious. I love that it has brown suede panels to break it up, and the contrasting lapels are a detail that’s very in vogue right now.

Underneath the coat, I’m wearing a burgundy velvet dress, also from Lavish & Squalor.

All of us involved in the shoot had so much fun, even if it was a freezing December day. I got a bit lucky though, the leopard jacket I’m wearing kept me pretty toasty! I think all of our looks showcase how layering can keep you warm, while still looking cool.

And there’s nothing like a fleece trapper hat and vest like Bobby’s (also from Lavish & Squalor) to keep you shielded from the elements. I love the way he’s layered a utility vest over a plaid shirt, yet somehow, it still looks urban and cool.

The gloves I’m wearing complete the vintage look, but I can’t help but be reminded of the ones Ryan Gosling wore in the movie Drive. I still can’t get over that jacket, it was the perfect winter topper!

All photos taken and styled by Bobby Raffin.

You can see these pics on the Lavish & Squalor blog too!

Sunnybrook Stables

If I could picture a perfect fall day, today would be it!  On my lunchbreak, I decided to go to Sunnybrook Stables, a riding school in the heart of Toronto.

It was a beautiful day in November with clear skies, and warm temperatures, so I decided to wear a cape instead of a wool topper.  I love the tweed texture and rustic toggles on this cape.  Underneath I wore a sheer chiffon blouse, and skinny grey pants.

Ironically, I was wearing saddle shoes… I’ve always loved horses, but my father has something against them, and never let me take lessons.  As a kid, I grew up watching My Little Pony (MLP), and I’m loving the resurgence in popularity now with MLP.  I gasped in excitement when I saw that the ring had a mini Shetland pony!

I fell in love with the sweet ponies that would come right up to the fence to take pictures.

This horse was especially photogenic and wanted to take pictures with all the visitors.

I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day.  The stable made it feel like I was up north, even though it’s located at Leslie and Eglinton, ten minutes from downtown and five minutes away from the DVP.  I love discovering nature in the city, and along with High Park, this area is beautiful in the fall.  Maybe I’ll sign up for some riding lessons in the spring to get some use out of my riding boot collection!

Alice + Olivia Fall Collection

Alice + Olivia’s Fall 2011 collection combines lady-like elegance with retro inspired looks.

I adore the way this video captures the essence of the collection.  The styling is cute and doll-like.  I can’t get over those cat-eye glasses (0:41) and the hats.

I adore this Bailey High Neck Dress ($614.47) for its elegant lace and sexy keyhole cut out in the back.

I’m also in love with the Sutton Fur Cuff Dress ($378.38), which comes in a rich shade of burgundy.  And the fur cuffs? So luxe.

I love the way the collection captured some key trends (snakeskin and navajo knits) while working them into their chic aesthetic of simply tailored cocktail dresses.

If only they sold the hats in this video…

Fabulous Four: September 1

Just in time for September, here’s my list of Hot New Things.

Cashmere Boyfriend Sweater
Nothing celebrates the arrival of the fall season more than a new cashmere cardigan.  Now that classic American brand J. Crew has hit the Canadian market, we can all take advantage of their classic cashmere sweaters.  This one has a modern twist with its easygoing boyfriend shape.  The deep v-necks turns the sweater from frumpy to fabulous.
Find it at J. Crew.

Hourglass Film Noir Lacquer
If eyes are the windows to your soul, your eyelashes must be the velvet drapes that frame the window frame. Add drama to your lashes by simply slicking on this eyelash gloss after applying mascara. The gloss leaves a high-shine finish that will make your eyes sparkle.  The top coat also strengthens, lengthens and adds shine without harmful chemicals or synthetic dyes and fragrances. This revolutionary new makeup product is a pro fave, so keep this product in your beauty bag for special nights out.
Find it at Sephora.

Giuseppe Zanotti Beatle Boots
These boots are set to be the it style for fall.  Beatle boots were seen on the runways of many influential designers like Alexander Wang, and are comfy and practical to wear all day long.  This pair amps up the style factor with its luxurious python embossed leather, which is another trendy detail.  The grey metallic colour is dressy, but can pair well with any colour.  Style these with a pair of jeans, an oversized white shirt and a fedora for an androgynous British look.
Find it at Giuseppe Zanotti.

Nightingale Shopping Bag
The Nightingale handbag by Givenchy is quickly becoming the it-bag among celebrities and fashion bloggers. The roomy space and clever design of this tote lets you carry around everything you need.  The crocodile-embossed leather is very luxurious and the plum colour is perfect for fall! The contrasting brown suede lining makes this pick totally swoon-worthy.
Find it at Givenchy.

Fabulous Four: August 22

Here are my picks for this week’s installment of Fabulous Four!

The Pippa Bag: Channel the Duchess’ cheeky younger sister with this gorgeous leather bag from Modalu London.  Pippa herself has been seen with the bag that features functional pockets and a modern silhouette. The textured leather is as stunning as Pippa herself! People from the UK have been calling Canada and begging to have this bag shipped across the pond, so grab yours before it’s sold out. Find it at Town Shoes.

Rosegold Watch: Season after season, the oversized gold watch has been a permanent fixture on the wrists of fashion bloggers, editors and businesswomen alike. Finally, a new hue has taken over as the ultimate timepiece. Rosegold is warm on the skin, and compliments earthy tones in an outfit.  This accessory will add instant interest to your look, while keeping you on time.  Find it at Michael Kors.

Larkin High-Heeled Loafer: Get in the mood for fall with this gorgeous twist on the preppy loafer.  High heels, texture and rich colours make the loafer the it-shoe for fall. Not only are they great for the office, you can walk around all day in these, thanks to their comfortable design that keeps your arch and heel supported.  Find it at Pour La Victoire.

Linen Dress Form: Once a seamstress’ best friend, a dress form will add interest and an eclectic touch to your space.  Not only do the feminine lines and height make for an amazing focal point in a room, the piece is functional as well! I use mine to plan out outfits for big events, because it’s the perfect canvas to see your look come together.  Designers have also been featuring dress forms in magazines and showrooms, so why not add a sartorial flare to your living room? Find it at Urban Outfitters.

Hermès Grand Apparat Look

So a couple weeks ago, I ordered my first Hermès scarf! I was so excited to wear it, I created a look that was inspired by the classic patterns and colours within this gorgeous design by Jacques Eudel.

The scenery at the University of Toronto suited my look perfectly.  The ivy, old brick buildings, gothic windows and copper roofs echo the preppy collegiate aesthetic I was after.

My skirt is from Forever XXI, my shoes are from a department store in the states and my scarf was from Beyond the Rack. Here’s a little video with this look in action:

Voting for the New York Fashion Week contest closes Friday, so please vote for me! Thank you to all of you who have already supported me, I feel so blessed to have such an amazing group of people that stand behind my work.

As we were walking by, This gorgeous Vespa screamed my name!  I had to take a photo with it, the pistachio colour complimented my outfit perfectly. I could easily see myself riding along the streets with my hair shielded from the wind by my new scarf…

To compliment my Hermes scarf and add some punch into the colour palette, I accessorized with this “Illusion Birkin” from Town Shoes. My gold watch is from Guess, and the gold bracelet is a vintage piece from Italy. I’ve been experimenting with layering bracelets and bangles with my watch, but I still haven’t quite gotten the hang of it. If you have any tips be sure to comment below!

I’m also wearing a Cinderella carriage necklace to compliment the horse motif of the scarf. Luckily my Prince Charming was there to snap these pictures!

Jonathan + Olivia Sale

This week, I took advantage of summer sales at one of my favourite stores in Toronto, Jonathan + Olivia. Their curated collection of items from TopShop were up to 75% off, and I think I snagged some amazing deals!

This coral jumpsuit is so amazing! For only $25, I couldn’t resist this pick to see me through the end of summer. The linen is super cool, and the coral colour actually coordinates with my skintone. Watch the video below to see how I styled this look:

I absolutely fell in love with this mongolian sheep skin vest. The grey colour is so unique and it was so warm, I had to have it for the winter season.

…it also reminded me of my dog, Rosie. I think she likes it!

And last, but not least, I got these gorgeous kitten-heeled Beatle boots that feature a luxurious leopard pony-hair. I love that the heel isn’t too high and the feminine lines soften this style. Polyvore has declared Beatle boots as the “it-boot” this fall, with designers like Giuseppe Zanotti and Alexander Wang leading the way.

They almost make me look forward to fall…
