Betsey’s Back!

Betsey Johnson addicts rejoice! We can all now relax and stop trolling the clearance section on her website. After filing for bankruptcy, Betsey Johnson announced a new affordable clothing line will be out in stores next Spring.

The line will be carried in department stores and will feature classic dress designs and her signature prints. Prices will range between $99 and $249 which is incredible, considering prices for her signature line were climbing, especially during the clearout!

I predicted that Betsey would be here to stay, because when I visited Macy’s and Lord & Taylor in Buffalo, NY, they had completely restocked her jewelry line… and everytime I visit, there seem to be more pieces. I had a feeling the designer would need to scale down her retail presence, but I predict that if her diffusion line does well in department stores, a couple stand-alone shops might return! Sometimes it’s as if bankruptcy is good for business, bringing new interest to a brand when people think it’s going extinct.

Until Spring 2013, keep your eyes peeled for teasers from her new line… rumor has it she’s still hosting a fashion show this September!

Raf Simons Named Creative Director of Dior

Fashion followers have been holding their breath over who would take over at Christian Dior. Rumours circled around Marc Jacobs, and Raf Simons, formerly the creative director of Jil Sander, was officially named the creative director of the French brand yesterday.

His debut collection for the brand will be at Fall Haute Couture Fashion Week in July. If only I could extend my flight dates to see the media buzz around this show!

Simons will be replacing John Galliano, who was dismissed from his position last year after making anti-semetic remarks. The brand has been in turmoil since Galliano’s departure, some casualties included a cheese block for a hat.

I’m curious to see what Simons’ take will be on the iconic French brand. His minimalism is a contrast to the ultra-feminine aesthetic of Dior, but he might take the brand into a new level, as he did with Jil Sander and being a major influence on fashion trends. You can thank Simons for the colourblock explosion we experienced last year!

But Simons doesn’t come without controversy. He was fired from Jil Sander right before the garments went down the runway in February.

LVMH believes the energetic new designer “will propel its iconic style into the 21st century.” The New York Times reports.

Simons said, “Of course I haven’t been in the archives yet, but for me the strongest impact is the first 10 years of Dior and how to link that to the 21st century,” He added, “Mr. Dior was very innovative during a short time span. And it was in the middle of the 20th century, a period I am very interested in, whether it’s linked to fashion, architecture or art. So I find it very challenging to rethink couture.”

Rethinking couture…maybe Simons will bring a New Look to the 21st century.

Jason Wu for Target

I love a good cheap and chic collaboration. Jason Wu for Target is no disappointment with its preppy East coast ensembles and darling accessories. The best part? Nothing is over $59.99! The collection comes out in Target stores on February 5 (also my dog, Rosie’s birthday). Here are some of my favourites.

The dresses are elegant and very demure, I love this white frock. It would look amazing at a garden party come summertime!

I’m a sucker for sheer panels, and this dress amps up a reserved cut with sexy black sheer on the collarbone.  Those little sheer socks are sweet too!

Look15zzaThis black and white ensemble is so simple and elegant. It reminds me of the uniforms they used to wear on Gossip Girl. That blouse with the dainty bow tie belongs in my closet. I’d love to modernise it (a la Janelle Monae) with a tuxedo pant and neon coloured shoes.

Look10zzaJason Wu brought a little Americana into this look! I like the red and navy contrast.

Look6zzaI could definitely see Michelle Obama in that pastel blue cardigan!  Michelle Obama is a big fan of Wu, and wore one of his gowns on the night of Barack Obama’s inauguration as President.

I’m obsessed with anything in blush, and this blouse is no exception! I love the ruffle detail on the front, as well as the print of that pencil skirt.

This ensemble is very fashion-forward for Spring.

Wu added a darker element to the collection with this trench. Trenchcoats are big for Spring, especially ones with contrasting details. I can’t tell much from this photo, but the light piping is a subtle touch.  Here’s to hoping the trench comes in more colours!

Look12zza-2This look is preppy purrfection. See what I did there?

The collection has some gorgeous accessories, including lady like structured bags. I don’t know what they’re made of, but at the price point, the designs and hardware are nice enough to spruce up your Spring-centered bag repertoire.

And my absolute favourite is this cat print silk scarf and tote!

I won’t be in North America for the launch, but hopefully my mom can snag a couple of goodies… she’s a great shopper, considering she nabbed a pair of gloves and shoes from the highly coveted Missoni for Target line this past Fall.

Let’s see if this collection can live up to the hype of its Italian predecessor – I really hope so, especially since the designs are just as cute.

Mila Kunis and Lana Del Rey Land Modelling Contracts

Two of my favourite ladies have both scored modelling gigs! Mila Kunis is the new face of Dior and indie darling Lana Del Rey is an official model now too.

Mila Kunis is the new face of Dior’s handbag line, and a worldwide campaign is set to launch early this year.  Shot by Mikael Jansson, Kunis is wearing demure black dresses, while showing off the updated version of the Miss Dior bag.

It will be no mystery what gown Kunis will walk the red carpet in at the Oscars this year!

The indie pop singer with pouty lips and a retro gaze (and a remarkable voice) has been signed by NEXT model management, Fashionista reports.  She’s part of the agency’s talent division, which also represents it-girls Alexa Chung and Alice Delall.

A month ago, internet speculation arose when Del Rey was pictured in a Prada print advertisement.  Obviously, this ad was a fake, but it was originally for an editorial in British magazine, Wonderland.

The singer has grown (controversial) popularity for her two hits and accompanying music videos, Video Games and Born to Die.  She’s one of my personal favourites right now, and with this modelling gig, she’s definitely one to watch in 2012.
