Pansy Print

With rising temperatures, it feels like spring is slipping away into summer. A couple weeks ago, I could admire the beauty of flowering magnolias and take in their heady scent. Now, the leaves are out and my skin is already taking on a tan (if you could even call it that!) This look was inspired by flowers and spring.

magnolias floral pants and shirtI’m wearing a purple pansy-printed tee c/o Nowistyle, ombre floral pants from Primark, shoes from Forever 21 and a Rebecca Minkoff Mini M.A.C. clutch.

pansy tshirtI love pansies because they remind me of spring. In Canada, we have spring days where you want to wear a swimsuit, and then days where you need to wear a tuque and boots… but the pansy can withstand all of that. So really, calling a guy a pansy would imply that he’s hardy and can withstand trying times.

Last, but definitely not least, I love my metal toe-cap flats. The gold caps are very reflective and add sophistication. I love pairing them with cropped pants like Audrey Hepburn. Once again, I’m digging the pansy print and didn’t realize till I edited the photos there are pansies also on the pants. Maybe I went a little bit too matchy-matchy, but it definitely completed the theme of the day.

black and white stripe maxi skirt

How to wear a Black and White Striped Maxi Skirt

One of the hottest trends for Spring are black and white stripes. While it’s easy to wear a striped blouse or jeans, I found a gem hidden at the back of my closet. A striped maxi skirt doesn’t sound like the most flattering item to wear around your hips, but it’s all about balance and playing with proportions.

I’m wearing a vintage striped maxi skirt (similar here), a black cropped bustier from Primark, a vintage pink envelope clutch, a gold key necklace c/o Foxy Originals and black spiked stilettos.

I think the key to pulling off this look is to counteract the voluminous bottom half. I did this with my crop top, which shows an inch of skin (and no belly buttons allowed!), which makes my bottom half look extra long. What I’ve basically done is move my natural waist up with the illusion of the crop top and the high waistline of the maxi skirt. Because the skirt has so many wide and thin varying stripes, I kept it simple with a plain black bustier, but a tight cropped tee could work too.

Heels finish off the look and add some height. While some people believe a maxi must graze the floor, I think differently. It’s up to you, because a pair of 4-inch heels never hurt anyone (well, except for your feet).

I accessorized with a bright pink clutch for a burst of colour. It’s easy to get lost in black and white, especially in summer, so a colourful accessory adds interest into a monochromatic look.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo y DIY Neon Ombre Pants

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Deseo tomar una margarita a la playa, pero soy en Canada. While I won’t be enjoying a margarita beachside this Cinco de Mayo, I wanted to share an outfit I wore while in Mexico over Christmas, and as a special treat, a how-to on my amazing neon ombre pants.

I’m wearing a neon green lace croptop from Primark (similar here), DIY ombre pants, neon plastic flip flops from Aldo (similar here) and Prada Sunglasses.

This DIY is super simple once you acquire the supplies:

1. White cotton pants (mine are from Chinatown)

2. S.E.I. Tumble dye (I used the neon green from the neon trio)

3. Plastic Bag to protect your area

4. A clothes dryer

Step One: Protect your area with a plastic bag. Since I’m only doing the bottoms, a grocery bag is big enough. If your fabric is thin, you might want to but a piece of cardboard in the pant leg to prevent the dye from transferring through to the other side.

Step Two: Spray the dye onto the cuffs of the pants in thick circular sprays. You want to saturate the bottoms to create a strong colour.

Step Three: Lightly spray the next section. This might take practice to get the proper ombre effect, but a good tip is to hold the bottle at a further distance, so it’s more like a mist of colour instead of a concentrated spray.

Step Four: Carefully flip the pant leg over and repeat the same process on the other side, making sure to catch the sides and seams as well!

Step Five: Repeat the same process on the other pant leg.

Step Six: Let the pants dry for 2-4 hours.

Step Seven: Throw the pants into your dryer at medium or high heat to set the dye. Follow the directions on the back of s.e.i. tumble dye.

This DIY is really simple, and only takes about 15 minutes for the dye application. It’s a fun way to spruce up a plain pair of beach pants, or a good way to liven up drap white tee or dress.

Runway to Real Life: Dolce & Gabbana Pepper Dress

The Italian kitchen. Onions, peppers, parmesan, garlic and of course, tomatoes come to mind. The get ups at Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2012 collection were inspired by the Italian kitchen and 50s housewives. With cinched-waist dresses, bustiers and full a-line skirts with whimsical prints, the collection is one of my favourites this seasont. The smell, taste and colour of authentic Italian food makes me miss Italy, but this dress brings back all of those savoury memories…

This look was inspired by the Spring/Summer 2012 runway of Dolce & Gabbana. I loved their whimsical collection and their nod to Italian cuisine. Fresh off the racks of Primark in Rotterdam, my dress was €20 well spent. To emulate the runway look, I wore a black belt (included with the dress!) black pumps from Zara and large rose earrings from H&M.

While my dress is a worthy copy, the red hot chilli pepper dress has become very popular,  and has been featured in numerous editorials and magazine covers.

Including Elle France, featuring Victoria’s Secret Angel, Behati Prinsloo wearing the Dolce & Gabbana dress on the glossy cover.

Red Carpet to Real Life: Kat Graham

I’ve always been inspired by celebrities and what they wear. The media watches their every move, but some stars always manage to look put together and on top of all the hottest trends. That’s why I’ve decided to start posting looks inspired by the hottest celebs, with my own twist of course…from Red Carpet to Real Life.

This look was inspired by an outfit Kat Graham wore last weekend in Vegas. I loved her TopShop dress and the way she kept it simple with black pumps, a geometric necklace and high pony. I copied this cheap and chic look with a dress from Primark, Zara heels and my hair all pulled up.

The Vampire Diaries star’s dress only cost £45.00, but mine was less than half that from Primark. Bodycon dresses in these prints are a huge hit this summer, but my sleeveless version helps keep me cool in the humid weather here in Holland.

I fell in love with this botanical print of orchids and birds of paradise. Expect to see more high definition prints of flowers, animals and ocean scenes to splash onto everything from dresses to jeans this summer. Just keep the styling simple to let the prints do the talking.
